Apple has officially unveiled iPhone 12 series in a virtual live event that was held on Tuesday 8 PM local time. iPhone 12 Series consist of four models, the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro max. All four models in the Apple 2020 line-up come with 5G network support and are powered by the most powerful Smartphone chip ever, Apple’s A14 Bionic chipset. This year Apple’s iPhone 12 Series line-up also packs new designs, bigger displays ever recorded on iPhone, improved cameras and OLED Displays.
iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Specifications
Apple’s iPhone 12 Mini features a 5.4-inch display and iPhone 12 features a larger 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED Display that would produce 478 PPI along with a 2,000,000 contrast ratio. The display features a 960 x 1079 pixel resolution and the refresh rate is set at 60 Hz. This was expected as it was clear Apple chose 5G connectivity on its latest iPhone series rather than 120Hz refresh rate. The peak brightness is measured at 1,200 nits and the display supports HDR and Dolby Vision and HLG. The display is protected by a new technology that Apple calls ‘Ceramic Shield’, which the company says it offers 4X better drop performance.
Moving to the processor, both models pack the A14 Bionic chipset built on 5nm architecture. Apple also claims that this processor will deliver a 40 per cent boost in CPU performance and a 30 per cent improvement in graphics over the existing A13 Bionic chip. Moreover, the new 16-core Neural Engine is touted to be capable of performing up to 11 trillion operations per second. There are also second-generation machine learning accelerators in the CPU to provide 10 per cent faster machine learning calculations over the previous-generation Neural Engine.
In terms of the Camera, both models feature a 12MP main camera with an f/1.6 aperture and support OIS. In addition, it supports 4K video recording at 60fps. The secondary camera is a 12MP ultrawide angle camera with f/2.4 aperture in combination with a 5P lens that supports 120-degree FOV. It supports Deep Fusion 2, Smart HDR 3, Night Mode, and Time Lapse video recording. The selfie camera comes with a 12MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture.
iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max Specifications
The iPhone 12 Pro features a 6.1 Super Retina XDR OLED Display and the iPhone 12 Pro Max features a 6.7-inch display( Largest display seen in iPhone ever). It comes with 458 PPI density. It also supports the same 1,200 peak brightness, contrast ratio, 10-bit HDR display as the iPhone 12 models. It’s powered by the same A14 Bionic Chipset we have seen with the iPhone 12 model.
In terms of the Camera, the Pro models extend the support Deep Fusion to all four cameras including the front camera. The triple rear camera array starts with a 12MP main camera with f/1.6 aperture. The 7P lens supports OIS and 100% Focus Pixels. The secondary camera is a 12MP ultrawide camera with f/2.4 aperture and 120-degree FOV. The third camera in the array is a 12MP telephoto sensor that has an f/2.0 aperture. It supports 2.5X Optical Zoom and OIS, with sensor-shift stabilization. In terms of video recording, it supports 10-bit HDR Dolby Video recording in 4K resolution at 60fps. These can be edited in the Photos app or any third-party software. The iPhone 12 Pro models come with a first-ever LiDAR scanner. It is capable of depth mapping the surroundings and complement AR apps. It also helps in faster autofocus in low light and improves portrait shots.
For the first time, the iPhone 12 Series will include 5G in mmWave and sub 6GHz across the USA with Smart Data Mode. It’s capable of handling up to 4 Gbps download speed and 200 Mbps speed thanks to 5G network.. Other notable features include Face ID, IP68 Dust, and Water Resistance. The four models will also support Dual Sim functionality with one physical sim and the other being an eSIM. All the iPhone models will run iOS 14 out of the box.
It is also worth to note that the iPhone 12 Series will be shipped without an AC adapter in the box. It only comes with a USB-C to Lightning cable and the phone. Other accessories will be sold separately.
Apple has also offered upgraded wireless charging support on the iPhone 12 series that supports magnetic chargers carrying the MagSafe branding, which was earlier associated with the magnetically charging accessories of previous-generation MacBooks in 2016.
MagSafe will improve wireless charging according to Apple. It features an array of magnets around the wireless charging coil of the iPhone for better alignment. These MagSafe chargers will provide up to 15W of power while still accommodating existing Qi-enabled devices. They also have new MagSafe accessories like the leather wallet that clips at the back of the iPhone.
